Katherine, Brian and Eric’s paper, titled ‘Identification of an Electrode-Adsorbed Intermediate in the Catalytic Hydrogen Evolution Mechanism of a Cobalt Dithiolene Complex,’ was accepted to Inorganic Chemistry. This paper provides unique insight into the H₂ evolution mechanism of a cobalt bisdithiolate catalysts in CH₃CN. Previous computational studies established that protonation of the unreduced cobalt complex is unlikely. This study shows that protonation of the unreduced species is possible under certain experimental conditions and results in an electrode-adsorbed intermediate that regenerates the homogeneous cobalt complex upon reduction.

Brian’s paper, Decoding Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer with Potential-pK_a Diagrams, was recently accepted to Inorg. Chem. In this paper, the theory behind potential-pK_a diagrams in non-aqueous solvent is derived, and two experimental examples demonstrate the utility of these diagrams in studying PCET reactions!

Noémie and Dan’s paper, Reaction Paramters Influencing Cobalt Hydride Formation Kinetics: Implications for Benchmarking H₂-Evolution Catalysts, was recently published in J. Am. Chem. Soc. Through the study of a stable cobalt hydride complex, the complex factors– beyond acid pK_a— dictating hydride formation reaction kinetics are revealed!

On Monday November 21, Brian McCarthy successfully defended his dissertation! Brian is off to New Haven, CT where he will begin a position as Coordinating Editor of the ACS journal Biochemistry. Congratulations Brian!!!

On Nov. 9, the Department of Chemistry held their annual undergraduate junior-senior banquet. During the event, senior Hannah Starr was awarded the James D. Altom Memorial Award for Undergraduate Research. Congratulations to Hannah!!!!

First year graduate student Carolyn Hartley recently joined the Dempsey group! Carolyn received her bachelor’s degree from The College of William & Mary where she worked with Bill McNamara. Welcome Carolyn!

Daniel and Brian’s paper, Synthesis and Electrochemical Characterization of a Tridentate Schiff-base Ligated Fe(II) Complex, has been featured on the cover of the August 16, 2016 (Volume 114) issue of Polyhedron! Congratulations!
